Joyful Athletics

Ask anyone at Paideia about its winning athletics strategy and you will hear some version of these words: “It is all about the experience our students have — about making it possible for them to look back on their time here as one of considerable growth and camaraderie."

It’s deliberately not about the scoreboard, though Paideia teams have earned substantial bragging rights compiling winning records across five decades of competitive high school athletics. When you provide students inspiration and the right role models, winning takes care of itself.

Coaching as a core strength

In Athletic Director Mike Emery — whose unparalleled experience includes more than three decades leading athletics at public schools, including a decade as director of Gwinnett County athletics, and 10 years at Paideia — student athletes could not have a stronger base of support.

Emery strives to attend as many athletic events as his schedule allows — a commitment that makes for long, but to him, incredibly fulfilling days. Beyond the joy of watching a host of athletes deliver their best, he is reminded of the good that comes from setting a high bar, hiring only those instructors who are demonstrably effective both in the classroom and on the field.

Paideia’s coaches care deeply about the athletes, embracing their key role in influencing the kinds of adults students become. Beyond teaching skills that make for success in a particular sport, they create a climate in which the desired intangibles take root: qualities such as teamwork, self-discipline, time management, commitment, sportsmanship, perseverance and sacrifice. It is for showcasing these virtues, not wins and losses, that our athletes ultimately wish to be known.

As dedicated as the coaches are to their teams, they are first and foremost leaders who recognize that the school’s success is measured holistically — as the sum of the efforts of the faculty and staff, band and choral directors, club sports leaders and coaches.

Athletes who “just do it” better

We teach for, and thus expect, our athletes to win with humility and lose graciously. We expect all interactions with opposing teams, fans and coaches to be positive.

In competition, Paideia students look out for one another, understanding that fairness and mutual respect must carry the day, that a win or loss is secondary to standing up for what is right.

You might call it “sweat equity,” an inviolable promise built into each athlete’s experience — that everyone has a role to play and is an equally important team member. Over the course of each career, every athlete is fully recognized and celebrated.

Get swept up in the spirit

School spirit is in generous supply at Paideia. Its primary ingredient is a bit different here and well worth celebrating: students genuinely like and go out of their way to help one another. Busy schedules notwithstanding, athletes come out for arts events and arts students for athletes’ games, while many students joyfully partake of both.

Supporting sportsmanship more broadly

Paideia athletes benefit from the school’s membership in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA),the sanctioning body for the state’s high school sports. A voluntary organization of more than 465 public and private high schools, the GHSA “strives to promote good sportsmanship and a cooperative spirit among its member schools” and “maintain high standards so that each pupil competing in each school is on the same basis.”

Forms

All students participating in JH or HS sports must complete the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Mandatory Health Questionnaire and Preparticipation Physical Exam. The health forms, with clearance by a physician or licensed practitioner, must be submitted through our Magnus Health system. In accordance with GHSA regulation, the physical exam will be acceptable one year from the date of exam. Please follow the Magnus Health system instructions for uploading or faxing the form; you will receive email reminders when the physical needs to be updated.

A Concussion Awareness Form must be signed by both a student and parent for each student participating in athletics.
