The Paideia School

Age 5

We have two options for 5-year-olds: one is a half-day program in a mixed-age class with 3- and 4-year-olds; the other is a full-day program in a mixed-age class with 6-year-olds. Typically, children with spring and summer birthdays are more successful in our half-day kindergarten. (In fact, children born from May 1 to Sept. 1, 2015 will ONLY be considered for our half-day kindergarten program.) Regardless, most 5-year-olds proceed to first grade the following year. Applicants to either of our kindergarten programs must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2019. If you have questions about which program is appropriate for your child, please don’t hesitate to contact either Caroline Quillian Stubbs, director of admissions, or Ashley Hughes Austin, assistant director of admissions.

Our half-day kindergarten program promotes social, emotional, and intellectual growth through a rich environment emphasizing exploration, imagination, interaction, and communication. Students in the half-day kindergarten program enroll in either a morning or an afternoon session, each of which consists of approximately 24 children, ages 3-5, with four dedicated teachers.

Our full-day kindergarten program typically serves children ages 5 ½ and older. Each self-contained multi-age classroom consists of two full-time teachers and a blend of kindergarteners and first-graders. Throughout the week, students visit specialists for science, library, music, art, and P.E.

Come to Visit

The best way to learn about Paideia is to come see us in action. We offer a number of different visiting opportunities, beginning in early October and continuing through late January. Some are open to prospective students and parents, some are for parents only, and some are age-specific. Please make plans this fall to schedule your visits. We look forward to meeting you.

  1. Prospective Parent Meetings: These informal talks by Headmaster Paul Bianchi are designed to provide a broad overview of Paideia for parents of all applicants. Paul discusses the school's philosophy and specific programs and spends a portion of each evening answering your questions. We invite you to arrive a half hour early to chat with faculty members and admissions staff.

Although reservations aren't required, please let us know you're coming by creating an account with Ravenna, our admissions software provider, and registering online. This does not commit you to applying to Paideia but does enable you to sign up for all admissions events. These meetings are for adults only.

  2. Campus Tours: Schedule a visit during a school day. We typically offer 75-minute tours and limit the size of each tour group to just a handful of parents. Visitors have an opportunity to see the school in action and to spend time observing activities in several classrooms.

We tour Monday-Thursday, early October-late January

Plan for Interviews

In general, admissions interviews are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis upon submitting an application. Our admissions process includes an interview with each prospective student and a separate parent interview conducted by a current Paideia parent.

For those submitting an early application, student interviews will take place the mornings of Saturday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 14. Parent interviews will take place the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 7 and the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 11.

All other student interviews for the half-day program will take place the morning of Saturday, Jan. 25.

Full-day kindergarten student interviews take place on select Saturdays in February and on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 17, which is a national holiday.

Most parent interviews for half-day and full-day kindergarten applicants take place on select weekday evenings and Saturdays in February and on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 17.

Because we don’t have much flexibility in our interview schedule, we suggest that applicant families preview the exact dates on our Admissions Calendar before making commitments that would conflict with these appointments.

  1. Students
Applicants will have the opportunity to meet with teachers who work with students their age. While these interviews may include an informal check of basic academic skills, we do not view them as comprehensive assessments. We encourage all students to wear casual, comfortable clothes to their appointments.

Half-day kindergarten applicants: Each child attends the interview with one parent. Together they spend a largely unstructured hour exploring the half-day classrooms with a group of a dozen other applicants, their parents, and a handful of teachers. Parents can participate by helping their children find activities of interest and playing with them, much as they do at home.

Full-day kindergarten applicants: Interviews include both an individual and small group portion and last 75 minutes. We ask that one parent plan to remain on campus for the duration of the interview. Please do not bring siblings.
  2. Parents
Our school emphasizes a high level of parent involvement, so we value this opportunity to hear more about applicant families and their current school and community activities. Prospective parents are matched with current Paideia parent volunteers for conversations that last about 30 minutes. These interviews work most effectively when parents are not distracted by their children, so please make childcare arrangements. Unfortunately, we don’t have much flexibility with these appointments, so we ask that you keep to your scheduled appointment even if only one parent can attend. Because of staffing limitations, we do not interview prospective parents who applied last year or current Paideia parents.

Note to parents of half-day and kindergarten applicants: We will not schedule your parent interview to coincide with your child's interview.
  3. Out-of-Town Applicants
If you are unable to visit during one of our scheduled interview days, please contact us before you make travel plans. We will be as flexible as possible in arranging tours and interview appointments for your family.
