The weather may still be chilly, but it's not too early to start planning for summer camp. Check out Paideia School's wide range of camp programs and options for students in pre-kindergarten through junior high school.

Half Day Mini Campers

Half Day Mini Campers
Camp for the younger children (ages 3, 4, and 5) is a half-day program from 9 AM-1PM. Mini Campers will have opportunities to participate in art and crafts, creative movement, sports, music, storytelling and water play. Your young child will have time each day for individual and group play.
Mini campers will be with experienced teachers and high school age counselors. In order to insure a rewarding experience for your child, there is limited enrollment for this camp program.
To be part of this program, children must be 3 years old by June 1. We cannot accept children in diapers.
PLEASE NOTE: REGISTRATION FOR THIS PROGRAM IS 3 WEEKS. THE FEE CANNOT BE PRORATED.
The program provides a snack and a camp T-shirt. Campers must provide their lunch and should bring a swim suit and a towel for water play. Please label all personal items. Betwixt & Between Camp
Betwixt & Between camp is especially designed for children entering kindergarten and first grade. Your child's day is centered in a self-contained classroom with experienced teachers and high school age assistants. In order to ensure a rewarding experience for your child, there is limited enrollment for this camp.
The camp day offers the Betwixt & Betweener a variety of choices, all within the same comfortable classroom surroundings. Activities on any day include art, cooking, indoor and outdoor games, floor time, storytelling, and music. The day's activities are designed to promote small group play but also leave time for individual interests. Water play on the sandy playground is one of the highlights so be sure to pack a swimsuit and towel. Please label all personal items.

The youngest campers enrolled in this program must be 7 years old by September 1st. Your child's day allows for the opportunity to develop independent choice while being able to enjoy the comfortable confines of a self-contained classroom. The lead counselors are experienced teachers and their assistants are high school/college students.
Each morning, your camper will have the opportunity to choose from the activities that are being offered to the entire Elementary camp. Daily selections may include arts and crafts, computer lab, dramatic play, indoor games, outdoor games library visits and more. Every afternoon, campers participate in activities designed by the homeroom that center around a specific weekly theme.
Camper may leave campus in school vans to go bowling.
Rising grade 3 - grade 6

Elementary Camp
The youngest campers enrolled in this program must be 8 years old by September 1 or entering grade 3 and the eldest entering grade 6. Your child will be assigned to a camp homeroom by age groupings. The homeroom lead counselors are experienced teachers and their assistants are college students.
Your camper's day will begin and end in their camp homeroom. This is also where they will eat their lunch.
The camp day is divided into a morning and afternoon activity session. Each day your camper will have the opportunity to choose from the activities being offered that are of interest to them and create their day!
The daily selections for all elementary campers might include arts and crafts in the art building, swimming, computer lab, dramatic play and skits, outdoor games; (kick ball, basketball, four square,) indoor gymnasium games; (bombardment, dodge ball) ultimate frisbee, chess, and role playing games, library time plus more. Many special weekly events are featured too.
Campers may leave campus in school vans to bowl and swim, or play at Candler Park or at Python Park, the Paideia sports field complex.

Junior High Summer Programs
Summer is a time for fun, but who says you can’t stimulate your brain and have fun at the same time?
Our Paideia Junior High Summer Program offers rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders the opportunity to develop their academic potential through challenging and interesting activities. Our experienced Paideia teachers bring innovative teaching methods to higher order thinking while making learning meaningful and fun.
The fee for each two-week period includes use of facilities, supplies, tee shirt and instruction. Campers need to bring their own lunches and snacks.
Participants select both a morning and afternoon course option for each two-week session and attend the same two courses every day. Please note that some options have limited enrollment. Registration will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
New this year! Special Interest Options.
This year we're introducing one Special Interest Option for each session of the Paideia Junior High Summer Program. Participants who choose these options will experience a more in depth exploration of the subject matter and will spend both their mornings and afternoons in the same class.

Robotics: Construction, Mechanics and Programming
Robotics: Construction, Mechanics and Programming
Do you have a mechanical mind? Do you have to know how things work? In this course for introductory to intermediate level robotics enthusiasts, you’ll spend your mornings building fun models using LEGO MINDSTORMS® components. You’ll investigate the construction and use of simple and complex machines and collaborate with others to build a series of machines designed to accomplish particular mechanical tasks. In the afternoons, you’ll learn to program your robots to accomplish tasks using NXT-G, a simple programming style that teaches the basics of programming and flow control without requiring the use of extensive parameters or coding. The activities in the course integrate fundamental concepts in physics, engineering, mathematics and technology.
Martin has eight years of teaching experience in science and math. His courses at Paideia focus on physics, calculus and technology applications. He has taught in our elementary summer camp and coaches the junior high Ultimate Frisbee team.

African Drumming and Dance
Wongai! Let's get down! Learn traditional rhythms, movements and songs from the cultures of West Africa. We’ll explore call/response and polyrhythmic beats from Mali, Senegal and Guinea. We’ll learn celebration dances for adolescents, including “Koukou” and “Gombe.” In this high-energy, “hands-on” workshop, you’ll get a taste of the artistry and beauty of traditional West African culture. The live African drumming is sure to stir your soul!
Tameca of Giwayen Mata, Atlanta’s premier all-female drumming and dance performance troupe, brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise and passion for her craft. Tameca has fifteen years of experience as a teacher and dance instructor and has been with Paideia for six years.

We’ll use free weights, exercise balls, Pilates techniques, resistance training and organized activities to get our bodies in better shape. We’ll learn motivational techniques, how to accurately measure results and how taking care of our bodies affects our minds and spirits.
Kemi has taught both high school and junior high math at Paideia for over ten years. Her high school short-term classes in physical fitness are some of our most popular offerings.

You’ll assume a “virtual” identity: a career, salary, home, marital status, children, transportation, etc. You’ll create a lifestyle for your character, while learning to pay bills, balance bank accounts, manage credit, keep financial records, save, invest and even shop. But there’s a twist! Changes in your economic circumstances can happen at any moment, and you may need to alter your lifestyles accordingly!
Bonnie has seventeen years of experience teaching social studies, ethics, literature and writing in the Paideia junior high. Her life-simulation games are always a favorite with students.

Bridge: Deal Me In!
Bridge: Deal Me In!
Bridge is a ton of fun and increasingly popular among teens. Like chess, it is a game of skill, requiring higher order thinking, planning and logic. Because it is played in partnership, it also involves complex rules of social etiquette. We will learn a short lesson on a new aspect of the game each day and then play out hands that use this new knowledge. We’ll finish with a tournament over the last two days. By the end of the course, our players should be able to hold their own in a social game.
Joanna has taught both junior high and high school French at Paideia for twenty-five years. She teaches a highly popular high school bridge class during short-term and has played bridge regularly since college. Last year’s campers loved this option.

Art Camp will provide young artists a dynamic summer experience to foster and enrich your creativity and develop their skills. Individual interests and ability levels will help shape a fun but serious range of projects in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, including sketching, painting, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media. On the last day of camp, we’ll showcase our creations in a gallery show for our friends and family. Come get your hands in clay and paint and let your creativity shine!
Dianne has been teaching art for almost twenty years. Her students have exhibited award-winning work in the Scholastic Art Awards, the Georgia High School Drawing Competition and the Dogwood Festival.

Lights! Camera! Action! Learn the ins and outs of iMovie and how to make a film in about the time it takes to watch one. This session covers iMovie from easy beginnings to more advanced possibilities. Learn to create a movie with still pictures and/or video clips as well as simple editing. Add text and music. Create special effects. The two-week session culminates with a Film Festival in which we’ll debut our masterpieces.
Julia has eight years of experience in filmmaking, education and freelance film projects. She has taught filmmaking at Paideia, co-directed the youth filmmaking program at People TV, and worked as an online film editor at Cartoon Network.Instructor: Julia Cordero

Let the Games Begin!
Overcome mental and physical challenges, compete for victory and have a ton of fun! We’ll play team sports like bocce ball, air soccer, balloon stomp and ice wars; board games like Trivial Pursuit, chess, dominos; card games; and online games like Words with Friends. You’ll get plenty of social interaction and teambuilding activities while learning about game strategy and the cultural history behind games.
Todd has three years of experience organizing indoor and outdoor youth activities of all kinds at Paideia School and “Youth on the Move,” a nonprofit educational program. When it comes to games, Todd is the Guru!

Eco Service and Outdoor Survival
Eco Service and Outdoor Survival
Be part of a select team of eight adventurous campers as we help "green" Atlanta and practice outdoor survival and camping skills. We’ll spend mornings doing service projects at area nature preserves and afternoons learning skills such as wilderness navigation, improvised shelter-making, fire building and outdoor cooking, “leave no trace” practices, stalking and camouflage, wilderness first aid, and more! Campers will need to wear closed-toe shoes and bring water every day. All necessary tools and equipment will be provided. For rising 9th graders at Paideia, the service hours may count towards the internship graduation requirement.
Lisa has been a seasonal Outward Bound instructor for twenty years. She enjoys whitewater kayaking, backpacking and rock climbing. When she's not enjoying free time in wild places, Lisa works as the Director of Service Learning and Civic Involvement at Paideia.

Keeping Up with Katniss: Exploring the Dystopian Narrative
Forget vampires. They're so last year. And werewolves and zombies are out. The latest trend in young adult literature is dystopia, visions of a future world in which all the rules have changed. Think The Hunger Games or Boneshaker or Delirium. In this reading, writing and creating course, we’ll explore the genre of dystopia, create our own dystopian stories and make short movies about the unpredictable and sometimes scary future.
Greg is an indefatigable reader, award-winning writer, and talented teacher. In his spare time, he hosts book groups all over Atlanta. Students rave about his genre-related literature/writing classes.

Bring your creativity and problem solving skills with you, because you’ll need them to design, build and program our LEGO robots. We’ll work individually and in small groups to learn the technology behind the construction and locomotion of these LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT robotic kits. We’ll cover principles of design and teamwork skills along the way. At the end of the session, the robots will compete to complete an obstacle challenge. May the best machine win!

Inquiry into Identity
If you’re aware of the social groups in your school, then you have the basis to understand power and politics in the wider world. In this interactive workshop about identity and power, we’ll explore the characteristics that define us, the stereotypes that confine us, and the values that unite us as humans. We’ll examine aspects of history, film, media, popular culture and current events to investigate why some people have power and some people don’t. You’ll learn more about yourself, the people around you and the society you live in.
Martha, an English and social studies teacher in the junior high, has combined the best activities from her “Inquiry into Identity: Race, Class and Gender” curriculum, which was featured in Middle School Journal, to create this workshop.

Come explore many cool ways to create imagery on clay! We’ll make plates, platters, bowls, vases, wind chimes, and tiles using slabs and molds, and then the REAL fun starts. We’ll explore how to create beautiful layered imagery on the ceramic surfaces with glazes and stains using stencils, stamping, wax resist, transfers, sgraffito, and more! We’ll even learn how to transfer a photo you take onto your work. After firing, you’ll have a collection of beautiful, unique and functional artwork!

Hone your thinking skills, broaden your knowledge and win prizes! If you like Jeopardy, Trivial Pursuit and sometimes even think school is fun, this is for you. Through fast-paced daily competitions, instructional exercises and fun activities, campers gain depth of knowledge in literature, history, science, social studies/history and math. We’ll end with a quiz bowl tournament on the last day. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to impress your friends and entertain guests at your parents’ dinner parties.

LEGOmation: Stop-Motion Movie Making
Have you ever wanted to make your own claymation video? Claymation would be tough to do in two weeks, but by using LEGOs instead of clay, we’ll warp the learning curve of this classic art style. By taking a series of still photographs, you’ll create your own three to five minute animation sequence. You’ll invent characters, write original scripts and create backgrounds to tell the story of your LEGO creations. This course combines creative imagination and technological skill.

Real Live Science Lab
How do scientists solve real live problems? Through hand-on, interactive experiments, we’ll use the scientific method to form hypotheses, conduct research, analyze data and draw conclusions. We’ll learn a how different stimulus affects the time it takes a mouse to run a maze, learn about habitats and create an ecosystem for a class pet. We’ll test the water quality of a nearby stream and study the effects that polluted water can have on an ecosystem. We'll even dissect frogs and sheep brains.
Che teaches junior high science, founded the junior high science club and coaches both tennis and softball. He has ten years of teaching experience and has been on the Paideia faculty for four years.

Trial and Error
What do lawyers do? How does a case get to court? What famous cases have helped shape our understanding of justice? In this interactive course, you’ll play the roles of judges, juries, attorneys, plaintiffs and defendants in a series of simulated courtroom scenarios. Through mock trials and case studies, you’ll learn first-hand about the systems and techniques unique to the field of the law, increase your understanding of the American judicial system and acquire critical and analytical thinking skills. As an added bonus, you’ll be able to argue your own cases more convincingly!
Kevin is a 31-year veteran teacher and author with a wide range of experience teaching history, American government and other social science classes. His ever-popular summer workshops have been a staple offering at Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development for the past ten years.

Are you an imaginative problem solver? Do you want to learn how to tackle problems creatively? We’ll use models, sketches, brainstorming, logic, and out-of-the-box thinking to solve all kinds of math problems. With emphasis on multiple approaches, resourceful thinking, intuition, and conceptual understanding, we’ll tackle a wide variety of thought-provoking challenges, design our own puzzles, and work collaboratively and individually to enhance our ability to think about our world in new and stimulating ways.

Have a sibling or friend who always wins Sorry? This course will teach you some of the basics of strategy (via game theory), and we’ll apply them to a wide variety of board games. Games will range from household classics like Sorry, Othello and Guess Who to complex games like Tigris and Euphrates, Puerto Rico and Agricola. For each game we will develop and test our strategies to see which is the best. Game on!!

Did you know that the top ten movies of the last decade had a teen protagonist, clear bad guys, magic spells and a hero’s path straight out of Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces? In this course we’ll explore the recurring pattern of the hero’s journey in mythology, popular stories and film. We’ll look at the power of archetypes on the human imagination and you’ll take a test to see if you fit the profile of a wanderer, orphan, warrior or magician. We’ll try our hands at creating archetypal characters and tell our own heroic tales.

3D Modeling
Ever want to design a building? Want to see what your room would look like with a pool in it? These things are tough to do in reality, but can easily be modeled with a little training. Using available architectural tools, we’ll investigate the basics of 3D modeling and use those basics to explore our imaginations. (added “s”.) These creations can be shared with the world using Google’s 3D Warehouse and even placed on Google Earth!
